Operation "Axis". A clash of yesterday's allies, Italians and Germans, in Dubrovnik. Immediately after the capitulation of Italy (8 September 1943), the Germans began disarming Italian troops and taking over their occupation zones. Resisting in the city of Dubrovnik, the seat of the Italian VI Army Corps, was the "Marche" Division, led by Divisional General Giuseppe Amico (a known opponent of the German-Croatian persecution of the Jews). After fierce street fighting and with the help of aviation, the resistance was crushed by the reinforced 2nd Regiment of the SS Division "Prinz Eugen". The regiment was commanded by the infamous SS-Standartenführer Schmidhuber, who was also appointed governor of the city on this occasion (among his first orders was the liquidation of General Amico, without trial, and the continuation of persecution of the remaining Jews). The picture shows the giant Mercedes-Benz L 1500 A of the 3rd Battery, Anti-Aircraft Battalion, "Prinz Eugen" Division (left), and the miniature L3 tankette of the "Marche" Division (beside the car); on the right is the equipment of Italian soldiers, scattered along the road, over the tram tracks. The photograph was taken in the part of the city called Boninovo, long known (because of the convenient cliffs) for numerous suicides.

Operacija "Osovina". Okršaj dojučerašnjih saveznika, Italijana i Nemaca, u Dubrovniku.
